There were 10,635 "State Schoolers" between 1886 and 1945 -- kids orphaned, abandoned, or abused and sent to the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children in Owatonna, Minnesota.

Don’t miss the newly restored Cottage 11, State School Kids' Memorial, Children's Cemetery, Flag Pole Plaza, and Rock Garden. Completed in 1905, the Minnesota State Capitol is used by the Minnesota governor, Supreme Court, Senate and House of Representatives. Designed by Cass Gilbert, who was known for his classical style and pioneering skyscrapers, the Capitol features the second-largest self-supporting marble dome in the world, works by important 19th- and 20th-century artists, and battle flags from the Civil and Spanish-American Wars.

This SNA hosts a magnificent old-growth pine forest near the eastern tip of Minnesota Point, the 7-mile long sandbar that shelters the Duluth Harbor and Superior Bay from the open waters of Lake Superior. Large red and white pines are anchored in the sandy soil of beach ridges. Many are between 120 and 200 years old, their crowns rising higher than 100 feet.
