America's 250th Lecture Series: America's 250th: - Struggles with Self-Governance: The Failure of the Articles of Confederation

In the late 1780s, our first national government was a spectacular failure and almost led to the dissolution of our new country almost before it began. Congress commanded little respect, with little to no support from State governments that were anxious to maintain their power. This presentation will explore why this was so, what prompted the states to agree to change, and how it occurred.

Steve Cole

Saxophonist Steve Cole is one of the most celebrated players in contemporary jazz. The Chicago native exploded onto the scene with 1998’s Stay Awhile, which fellow Chicagoan Brian Culbertson produced. The disc scored multiple Number One hits and earned Cole the Oasis Smooth Jazz Award for best new artist. Steve is currently recording his twelfth solo album, to be released in the summer of 2025. Steve is also currently touring and selling out venues across the country.

Patti Austin

Patti Austin’s keen interest in being a total entertainer likely started when she was four years old. Then, she stepped onto the stage of the world-famous Apollo Theater in Harlem at the urging of Dinah Washington. During the 1970s Patti reigned as the undisputed queen of the New York session scene. Her 2002 recording Avant Gershwin won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Her recent recordings celebrate the great Ella Fitzgerald in Patti’s unique song storytelling style.

Jim Messina

An undisputed expert in the fine art of making hit music, Jim Messina’s legacy of musical genius spans five decades, three super-groups (Buffalo Springfield, Poco, and Loggins & Messina), a vibrant solo career and scores of producing and engineering credits. Touring the country and playing sold-out shows, Jim says that he’s enjoying discovering who he is, where he’s been and, most significantly, where he’s going.

Jack White No Name Tour

Born the youngest of ten children, raised in Southwest Detroit and a resident of Nashville since 2005, Jack White is one of the most prolific and renowned artists of the past 20+ years. When the White Stripes started in 1997, no one, least of all Jack, ever expected that a red-and-white two-piece band would take hold in the mainstream world. With the release of 2001’s White Blood Cells, the band was thrust on magazine covers and captivated audiences through worldwide touring.
