Take a Road Trip on Central Minnesota's Scenic Byways

All along central Minnesota's scenic byways, the fragrance of lilacs and clover-scented countryside mingles with pine and spruce forests and whiffs of campfires at campgrounds and state parks. Soak it all in: Roll down the windows, lean into the breeze and joyfully inhale.

Feeling more adventurous? Strap on a helmet, rev up a motorcycle and hug roads that curve along wetlands and rural steepled churches, then follow the glittering blue of Minnesota’s famed lakes and rivers.

10 Things To Do in Stillwater

The charming river town of Stillwater is located on the banks of the St. Croix River and has been dubbed the “birthplace of Minnesota” due to its significance in Minnesota’s lumber industry. These days, it's known best for its bustling downtown filled with unique local shops, restaurants, breweries, wineries, boutique hotels and biking opportunities.

Zumbrota Covered Bridge

Minnesota's only remaining original functioning covered bridge is located in the southeastern City of Zumbrota. The Zumbrota Covered Bridge is listed on the National Historic Register, and has been restored to its authentic state, reflecting the heritage of early pioneer settlers. The bridge spans the Zumbro River in the 85-acre Covered Bridge Park. The park is also the trailhead for the Goodhue Pioneer Regional Trail, a multi-modal trail which connects with the cities of Goodhue and Red Wing.

Zumbro Valley Golf Club

Built in 1926, our nine-hole course features breathtaking views of the Zumbro River valley. The windy Zumbro River meanders across four of the holes. We are known for our challenging grades and small, but true greens. The course is short enough for the beginner, but challenging enough to keep the seasoned veteran interested. The course measures 2592 yards from the blue tees and 2755 from the black tees.

Zumbro Bottoms Horse Campgrounds

Located in RJD Memorial Hardwood Forest, the Zumbro Bottoms Management Unit has 3 campgrounds; Central, North, and West, managed by Frontenac State Park. The 72 horse campsites are considered "primitive," designed to furnish only the basic needs of the camper. The campsites consist of a cleared area, fire ring, and table. A vault toilet, a hand-pumped well, picket lines, tie rails, and manure disposal are also available. The campground allows for portable corrals.
