Strides Against Bladder Cancer

The UMN Department of Urology is hosting their annual Strides Against Bladder Cancer walk to raise funds and awareness for bladder cancer research. This family-friendly 3K walk takes place on Saturday, May 10 at Boom Island Park. All proceeds benefit bladder cancer research and education at the department's Institute for Prostate and Urologic Cancers. Each participant will receive a T-shirt at check-in. From the early New Orleans of Jelly Roll Morton to the world-changing joys of Louis Armstrong. The barrel house sounds of Preservation Hall to the Crescent City rhythms of rock and roll pioneer Fats Domino. Treat yourself to a century’s worth of New Orleans jazz.

Small Handled Whisk Broom Class

Bring your creativity! Together, we'll make a small handled whisk using kitchen utensils, treasured sticks, rulers... you name it! Learn to master the foot bobbin, plait the broomcorn stems around the handle, and stitch the sweep flat. We will be working with all natural broomcorn, complemented by a rainbow of string color options. Feel free to bring your own handle; if you're not sure whether something will work, bring it along, and we can look at it together during class!

Slavic Folk Embroidery Class

Spanning from the Caspian Sea to the Carpathian Mountains, the Slavic world has a rich and dynamic history of craft embroidery practices, folk dress traditions, and creative rituals. Participants in this introductory course will have an opportunity to learn about some of the regional designs and histories of Slavic folk embroidery, experience a traditional Slavic tea service, and examine vibrant antique and archival textile samples of Slavic folk costumes.

Photography & Art at the Rock, a monthly exhibit in the lobby of the Split Rock Lighthouse Visitor Center that showcases local artists, landscape and wildlife photographers of the area.

Nuno Felted Scarf Class

In this class, students will create a one of a kind nuno felted scarf. The scarf is created by combining silk, merino wool roving, and assorted embellishments including elements such as yarn, viscose fibers, sari silk, and adding soapy water and some rolling of the silk and fibers. The result is a piece of wearable art that is a great addition to your wardrobe! The class requires some physical stamina in terms of standing and rolling movements with your arms. Instructed by Bobbi Hoppman of Witty Knitty Designs.
