For almost four decades, the Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band has been “stunning” fans. Further, they are loved worldwide for their fiery live shows and rich musical catalog. Their trademark sound pays homage to the New Orleans brass band tradition. Also, they weave a tapestry that combines elements of jazz, funk, soul, R&B. Then, they incorporate more of the sounds from the streets they grew up on.

North Star Voices: Cafesjian’s Carousel - History in Motion

The historic Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel number 33 spent 75 years at the Minnesota State Fair from 1914 to 1989 and was saved from the auction block in 1988 by the nonprofit citizens’ group Our Fair Carousel Inc., which owns and operates the ride as a Minnesota treasure in Saint Paul’s beautiful Como Park.

Join Tracy Tolzmann for a review of the carousel's rich, colorful history, with a look at its 68 unique carved wooden horses, the mechanism that makes it all work, and the traditional “Voice of the Carousel,” the wonderful Wurlitzer 153 Band Organ.

Karrin Allyson: Wintry Mix

Few American jazz singers have had as long and fruitful a relationship with Brazilian music as Karrin Allyson. Her early albums included such classics as “Corcovado” and “One Note Samba”. Then, her 1999 recording From Paris to Rio split the difference between songs from those musical cities. 2008’s Imagina: Songs of Brazil raised the ante on Rio. Now, here’s another all-Brazilian outing, 2024’s A Kiss for Brazil, featuring the great Bahian singer-guitarist Rosa Passos on two songs.
